Group of 5 Rare Antique Carnelian Tuareg Tanfouk Talhakimt Hair Ornaments - Rita Okrent Collection (P675f))

RARE FIND: only one in our inventory

Group of small, rare antique carnelian Tanfouk or Talhakimt fertility amulets, traditionally worn by Tuareg women as hair ornaments.

Circa 1700's - 1800's. Made in Cambay, a historic city and former princely state in Gujarat, India. These were the very early editions of larger agate amulets made in Idar Oberstein (1800's and later) and those made of glass from the Czech Republic and France (1900's).

These amulets were found in Burkino Faso and in Niger, West Africa. See the recent Ornament Magazine article inspired by these amulets by Robert K. Liu (link below). As Robert states in the article, "I have not seen this type of fertility amulets for the Tuareg since the 1970's."

Similar but newer amulets can be seen worn on Guedra dancers in Mauritania in Angela Fisher's reference text, Africa Adorned.

Measure 25-31mm (1 - 1.22 inches tall).

Price is for all. You will receive amulets in photos.
