Group of 5 Antique Carnelian Small Tuareg Tanfouk Talhakimt Hair Ornaments - Rita Okrent Collection (P675e)

RARE FIND: only one in our inventory

Hard to find small, rare antique carnelian and agate Tuareg Tanfouk / Talhakimt hair ornaments. Traditionally worn by Tuareg women, woven into their hair for decoration, and sometimes as pendants/amulets. Wonderful for use in your jewelry designs.

From Niger, West Africa, hand made in India. Similar (newer glass styles) seen worn in Angela Fisher's reference text, Africa Adorned. See photo.

Circa late 1800's - 1900's. These were the early editions of such amulets made in Idar Oberstein. Larger tanfouk / talhakimt pendants of agate and those made of glass (in a variety of colors) are copies of these beauties, and are not as old.

Measure 25-31mm (1 - 1.22 inches tall). This group has some small chips due to use and wear and is priced accordingly.

Price is for all.
