Hard to find rare antique carnelian Tuareg Tanfouk / Talhakimt Hair Ornaments. Traditionally worn by Tuareg women, woven into their hair for decoration, and sometimes as pendants/amulets.
From Niger, West Africa. As seen in Angela Fisher's reference text, Africa Adorned.
Estimated circa early 1900's. These were the early editions, made in Idar Oberstein. Larger tanfouk / talhakimt pendants of agate and those made of glass (in a variety of colors) are copies of these beauties.
Measure 22-29mm (.8 to 1.15 inches tall) up to 1 inch) tall.
