A magnificent long strand of vintage phenolic resin beads from West Africa.
Circa 1950's, approximately, these beads were produced in Europe for the African trade, and were made to resemble real amber (especially an issue after access to Baltic amber became limited after WWII).
These beads are traditionally used as hair beads and worn in necklaces by African women, and come from Mauritania. Interesting research note: the diamond shaped beads may have been carved from round beads!
Luscious butterscotch, butter and caramel hues. Lovely patterns. Very collectible and useful beads for jewelry designs.
38 beads total. 28 inch strand. 12 beads are cross-drilled. Sizes vary with large focal beads measuring approximately 24x38mm and 25x35mm. Carved diamond beads range from 21-31mm. 20+ small and medium beads. Small beads range from 10-12mm diameter and medium beads range from 17-19mm diameter.
