A 3-dimensional hollow heart pendant with openwork filigree on all sides, adorned on one side with a crescent and star. Granule cluster tip at the point and filigree bail.
Why We Love It
The combination of heart, crescent, and star on one piece is a striking bit of symbolic layering.
Filigree work covering the entire amulet gives it real presence with the granule cluster tip and filigree bail marking it as characteristic Mauritanian work.
Hollow construction keeps it substantial yet comfortably lightweight to wear.
Provenance: Mid-20th century Mauritanian origin.
Dimensions: 5.67 cm (2.23 in) tall x 4.53 cm (1.78 in) wide x 1.56 cm (0.61 in) deep. Weight 12.18 grams.

These pieces are glowing! They are so beautiful!!! I picture women wearing them in the sun and imagine how they must have gleamed in their hair. The white ornament surely glinted with sunlight! The ornaments must have moved so gracefully in their hair and with the light striking the pieces. I imagine this was an incredible thing to see! I feel like I understand these adornments in ways I never could have, not having seen them in person before.
