Turkish silver headdress accented with glass beads and Turkish silver calligraphic tughra coin pendants. Nine coin pendants at the center are lovely and two-sided; the side coins are plain, pierced for attachment.
Why We Love It
This headdress has real presence, with its cluster of calligraphic coin pendants catching the eye at the center. The tughra motif and construction style connect it to a specific regional tradition of silver adornment, and the combination of coin work, glass, and cabochon settings gives it a layered, collected-over-time character. It’s a charming piece, and the missing elements don’t take away from its overall appeal.
Provenance: Resembles a Shihr-style headdress illustrated in Marjorie Ransom’s Silver Treasures from the Land of Sheba, p. 198.
Age: Circa 1940s–1950s
Dimensions: 18 inches / 45.7 cm; weighs 102.65 grams / 3.5 oz
Condition: Low-grade silver (approximately 80 parts silver or better). Top center silver pendant has damage on one side. A number of cabochon settings are now empty; remaining cabochons may be coral. Beads are glass. Has a clasp, though it may need replacing for more secure wear.

These pieces are glowing! They are so beautiful!!! I picture women wearing them in the sun and imagine how they must have gleamed in their hair. The white ornament surely glinted with sunlight! The ornaments must have moved so gracefully in their hair and with the light striking the pieces. I imagine this was an incredible thing to see! I feel like I understand these adornments in ways I never could have, not having seen them in person before.
