Hebron beads were traditionally made using sand from the village of Bani Na'im and sodium carbonate from the Dead Sea. From the 18th to the mid-19th century, Hebron became a major center for producing glass beads specifically for trade, particularly in Africa. These beads were widely traded in West Africa, especially in Kano, Nigeria. The Yoruba people in this region would grind down the rough edges of the beads so they would sit more uniformly when strung. Due to their prevalence in this area, they are also commonly known as "Kano beads."
