Vintage North African Silver Salhat Pendant - Rita Okrent Collection (P784b)

This coin silver pendant was traditionally worn by a woman after she became a mother for good luck and protection. Called Salhat or Salhayat, they were worn by the women of Libya, Algeria and Egypt.

This particular pendant has fish engravings and lovely details at the bottom. It does not have a broken tip. There are different theories about why the tip was broken on some of these amulets (either for currency or for the birth of a child). The back is plain.

Traditionally these were worn as part of a necklace (see photo).

Age: Mid 20th Century. (old)
