Group of 5 Antique Carnelian Small Tuareg Tanfouk Talhakimt Hair Ornaments - Rita Okrent Collection (P675d)

RARE FIND: only one in our inventory

Hard to find small, rare antique carnelian and agate Tuareg Tanfouk / Talhakimt hair ornaments. Traditionally worn by Tuareg women, woven into their hair for decoration, and sometimes as pendants/amulets.

From Niger, West Africa. Similar (newer glass styles) seen worn in Angela Fisher's reference text, Africa Adorned. See photo.

Circa early 1900's. These were the early editions of such amulets made in Idar Oberstein. Larger tanfouk / talhakimt pendants of agate and those made of glass (in a variety of colors) are copies of these beauties, and are not generally as old. G

Measure 29-34mm (1.15 - 1.33 inches tall).
