Antique Chinese Silver Donkey Amulet, Qing Dynasty - Rita Okrent Collection (P864)

Hollow silver donkey amulet from the Qing Dynasty with delicate repousse silversmithing.

As seen in the reference text Four Centuries of Silver by Margaret Duda, p. 88. 

As per Margaret Duda's research, these donkey amulets should be hung upside down with hooves in the air to represent the white donkey of Zhang Guolao, one of the Eight Daoist Immortals. A symbol of endurance and perseverance. this mythic beast could carry Zhang Guolao one thousand miles without resting. 

Has hole on one side at neck area, possibly from previous use in necklace.

35mm x 25mm. 4.44 grams.
