Vintage North African Silver Salhat Pendant - Rita Okrent Collection (P784)

RARE FIND: only one in our inventory

This coin silver pendant was traditionally worn by a woman after she became a mother for good luck and protection. Called Salhat or Salhayat, they were worn by the women of Libya, Algeria and Egypt.

This particular pendant has fish engravings and a broken tip. There are different theories about why the tip was broken (either for currency or for the birth of a child). The back is plain.

Traditionally these were worn as part of a necklace (see photo).
